CLEAN UP YOUR OWN
"AUGEAN STABLES!"
This saying from the time of Hercules, refers to the filthy condition in a royal stable so incredibly raunchy because no one had cleaned it in years!
Today, the saying is sometimes used to refer to cleaning up ones own act
before being critical of others.
Scandinavia has always been amongst the cleanest of countries. But even there,
people sometimes fall flat on their face!
Greta Thunberg,
who has now become a poster child
for a "New World Odor" is very much for
"cleaning up" the enviroment. This is something everyone can do on a daily basis, of course. So can cities and towns and factories. In short,
just about everyone.
Last October (2019),
I visited Norway, a country often a leader in many things whether it be clean oil development, underground freeways, cross-fjord freeways (also underground) and many other innovations. While I was visiting the small town of Eidsvoll (some distance north of the Capital of Oslo), where the Norwegian Constitution was drafted and signed in 1814 at their Independence Hall, I traveled around to look at and enjoy the gorgeous land, its beautiful buildings, farms and countryside. I also looked at recreation areas. Norway allows trespassing on rural properties so everyone can enjoy the
"out-of-doors." Their recreation sites are noted
for cleanliness for the most part. North of Eidsvoll, I found a gorgeous spot next to a beautiful lake with a bus-stop allowing access to the recreation site. There was both a pleasant and unpleasant surprise in store.
This country road is a great example of good construction.
Notice the narrow shoulders and guard rails. The recreation site is just to the right in the photograph by the lake......
.....Below the road was a nice little campsite for picnicing and swimming. But there was no road access, just a bus-stop at the road
and a life-preserver thoughtfully hung on a post for use...
.....A picnic table was chained to the ground
presumeably to prevent it
from "walking off" by itself!
....On the opposite side of the hiway
at the junction of a gravel road was a sign which
announced to everyone that this
is a Private Forest Road
and that driving on it is forbidden!
I parked there,
because it was the only place to park.
I looked around, and discovered
some Blueberry Bushes, so
I decided to walk up into the forest a few feet to see
if there was a good patch of them,
and Lord Almighty
what did I see?
Take a look for yourself!
Some very thoughtful People
had a series of Picnics behind the Fir and Pine Trees
and left their Calling Cards
for the World to see!
My question is, where is
Greta Thunberg
when we really need her??!
Complaining about governments not doing anything worthwhile environmentally, of course!
Sometimes, the Augean Stables
are right at home,
Greta, my love!
So get your "sweet lil dernier" in gear
and clean up your own part of the world!
I can assure you
we will love you for it!
